Also shown as: dE, dS, dL, FL, LO Last verified: 2026-10-30
Most likely causes, in order
| Cause | How common |
|---|---|
| Laundry caught between the door or lid and the seal | Most common |
| The door or lid not pushed fully shut until it clicks | Common |
| A bent, loose or broken latch or strike | Common |
| An overloaded drum pressing against the door | Less common |
| A failed door lock assembly | Least common — service job |
What to try, easiest first
- Open the door or lid, remove anything caught in the seal, and take out a few items if the drum is packed tight.
- Inspect the latch and the strike it clicks into. If either is cracked, bent or loose, do not force it — book service.
- Close the door firmly until you hear and feel the click, then restart the cycle.
- If the code returns immediately with the door firmly shut, power the washer off and on once. A repeat code means the lock assembly needs checking.
Reset procedure
Soft reset (first try): press Power to switch the washer off, wait about 2–3 minutes, switch it back on and restart the cycle. If the code was a one-off sensor glitch, it often clears here.
Hard reset: switch the washer off, unplug it from the wall outlet (or switch its breaker off) for 2–3 minutes, plug it back in and restart. Never open a panel or touch wiring while it is plugged in.
When to call a technician
Call a technician if the latch is damaged, the door will not stay shut, the door will not unlock after a cycle, or the code returns with a firmly closed door.
Difficulty, time and cost
| Difficulty | Easy |
|---|---|
| Typical DIY time | 5–15 minutes (editorial estimate, not a quoted time) |
| Part / job cost | $40–$90 for the door lock / latch assembly part alone. Part-only range from the part-cost guide; never bypass or jam a door lock — it is a safety part. Prices vary by model and area — treat every figure as an estimate, not a quote. |
Model notes and limits
dC is the current display for the door fault. On a small number of older models the same dC label was used for an unbalanced load instead — if the load is visibly uneven and the door is firmly shut, check your manual.
Front-load and top-load models, AddWash/FlexWash models, and US versus UK displays can show the same fault differently. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model number (on the label inside the door or lid, or on the back of the washer) before ordering a part.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the washer refuse to start at all for a door code?
The washer will not fill or spin unless it can confirm the door is locked. That lock check protects against flooding and a spinning drum opening mid-cycle.
The door looks closed but the code stays. What next?
Check the seal gap for a trapped sock or towel edge, then check the latch for damage. If both look fine, the lock switch itself is the suspect.
Can I hold the door shut to finish the wash?
No. If the lock cannot hold on its own, stop and get it repaired. A door that opens during spin is dangerous.
