Samsung Washer Error Code nF
The washer is not filling with water in the expected time (older letter display).
Also shown as: 4C, 4E, 1 4C Last verified: 2026-10-30
Most likely causes, in order
| Cause | How common |
|---|---|
| A tap is closed, partly closed, or the home water supply is off | Most common |
| A kinked, squashed or frozen supply hose | Common |
| A clogged mesh filter where the hose meets the washer inlet | Common |
| Low household water pressure | Less common |
| A failed water inlet valve that no longer opens | Least common — service job |
What to try, easiest first
- Check both taps are fully open and that water runs from a nearby tap in the home.
- Straighten both supply hoses, remove any kink, and confirm the hot hose goes to the hot inlet and the cold hose to the cold inlet.
- Turn the water off, disconnect each hose at the washer end, and rinse the small mesh filter inside the inlet. Reconnect firmly and check for drips.
- If the washer has a flood-safety hose device, remove it temporarily and connect the hose directly, then test — a tripped safety device can starve the washer.
- Restart the cycle. If it still will not fill, the inlet valve is the likely fault and needs a technician.
Reset procedure
Soft reset (first try): press Power to switch the washer off, wait about 2–3 minutes, switch it back on and restart the cycle. If the code was a one-off sensor glitch, it often clears here.
Hard reset: switch the washer off, unplug it from the wall outlet (or switch its breaker off) for 2–3 minutes, plug it back in and restart. Never open a panel or touch wiring while it is plugged in.
When to call a technician
Call a technician if the code returns after the taps, hoses and mesh filters check out, or if water leaks from the valve area.
Difficulty, time and cost
| Difficulty | Easy |
|---|---|
| Typical DIY time | 15–30 minutes (editorial estimate, not a quoted time) |
| Part / job cost | $30–$85 for the inlet valve part alone. Part-only range from the part-cost guide; a professional valve job typically costs more — get a written quote first. Prices vary by model and area — treat every figure as an estimate, not a quote. |
Model notes and limits
nF is the older letter-style display of the 4C/4E fill fault. It appears on models without the newer C-style display. The checks are identical; only the display differs.
Front-load and top-load models, AddWash/FlexWash models, and US versus UK displays can show the same fault differently. Always confirm against the manual for your exact model number (on the label inside the door or lid, or on the back of the washer) before ordering a part.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run the washer with only the cold tap open?
No — Samsung top-load models need the hot supply connected too, because the washer mixes water to reach its target temperature. Connect both hoses.
The code appeared once and then vanished. Is that normal?
Yes, if pressure dipped briefly or a tap was bumped. If it keeps returning, work through the steps above instead of repeatedly resetting.
How do I know the mesh filter is the problem?
Slow filling that gets worse over months, plus grit visible in the filter, points to it. A sudden no-fill after plumbing work points to a closed tap or kinked hose.
